The first movement (3-5 mins) is the most approachable of Shostakovich’s first 4 quartets for both players and audience. Shostakovich described it as ‘naïve and bright with association of Spring’. A lyrical first subject followed by a cadenza-like 2nd subject accompanied by a witty glissando motif. Benefits from a strong sense of pulse, the ability to characterise bare notes, good cantabile and spiccato.
